Three Zones, Three Experiences
This is the first question I ask every couple: where in Marrakech do you see yourselves? Because Marrakech is not one place. It is three very different wedding zones, and the one you pick shapes everything, the atmosphere, the budget, what your guests experience, how the photos look. The Medina is the ancient walled city. Intimate, cultural, full of character. The Palmeraie is the palm grove 15 minutes north, home to the big luxury hotels and resorts. The Agafay Desert is 40 minutes south, wide open landscapes with the Atlas Mountains behind. I have planned weddings in all three. Each one gives you something the others cannot.
The Medina: Intimate Heritage
The Medina is 900 years of history packed into narrow winding streets. It is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and it feels like it. Your venue options here are riads (courtyard houses), historic palaces, and rooftop terraces with views for kilometres. I love the Medina for couples who want to feel like they are actually in Morocco, not at a resort that could be anywhere. The scent of orange blossom, the call to prayer at sunset, candlelight on zellige tile. Nothing modern can replicate this. Best for weddings of 20 to 80 guests. Top venues: Riad El Fenn handles up to 120, Riad 72 is perfect for 15 to 30, El Badi Palace goes up to 500 for grand events. Total cost runs €15,000 to 55,000. But I need to be honest about the downsides. Limited capacity. Noise curfew at midnight or 1am. No vehicle access, so your guests walk the last stretch through alleyways. Narrow staircases everywhere. If you have guests with mobility issues, think carefully.
