our editorial review
La Pause sits in the Agafay desert, about 30 kilometers southwest of Marrakech, roughly a 40-minute drive. Founded in 2002 by Frédéric Alaime, who discovered the land on horseback, the property is an eco-lodge built entirely from pisé (traditional mud and straw). There is no electricity, no WiFi, and minimal cell reception. Rooms are lit by candles and oil lamps. Heating comes from wood stoves. Showers are strong but the tents have open-air ones. The property has eight stone lodges with private bathrooms and a number of Bedouin glamping tents with foam mattresses. The pool is set into the desert landscape, surrounded by nothing but rocky terrain and sky. On a clear day you see the Atlas Mountains in the distance. At night, the stars are extraordinary. The vibe is barefoot luxury, not polished five-star. Guests who love nature, silence, and campfire conversations will be in their element. Guests who need air conditioning and room service will not.
La Pause can host weddings for up to 100 guests. Ceremonies typically take place outdoors, on a desert plateau overlooking the landscape or beside the pool area. For dinner receptions, the property sets up long tables under nomadic tents with rugs, cushions, and lantern light. The absence of electricity means everything runs on candlelight and battery-powered speakers, which creates an atmosphere that no decorated ballroom can replicate. Some couples set up a separate cocktail area on higher ground with panoramic views. Others organize a camel procession for the bride's arrival. A traditional Berber drumming circle is a popular feature for the evening celebration. Catering is handled in-house with a Moroccan menu, tagines, couscous, grilled meats, and fresh salads. The kitchen is simple but the food is honest and generous. For groups of 30 or more, custom menus and pricing apply. The full-board model means breakfast, lunch, and dinner are included in the nightly rate for staying guests.
A wedding at La Pause typically starts at around 140,000 MAD (approximately 13,000 euros) for the ceremony, cocktail, and dinner. Nightly accommodation in the lodges starts from around 250 euros per room on a half-board basis. Full property buyout for 3 nights, accommodating approximately 16 guests in lodges plus additional guests in Berber tents, runs between 15,000 and 25,000 euros depending on season and configuration. Additional Bedouin tents can be set up for larger groups but comfort is more basic. Decoration is usually kept natural, which helps control costs, think dried flowers, local textiles, and pottery rather than imported floral arrangements. Entertainment, DJs, and additional lighting need generators, which add to the budget. External vendors are possible but need to be self-sufficient since there are no power outlets. Shuttle transfers from Marrakech hotels are essential and typically cost 500 to 1,500 euros depending on group size and number of trips.

favoriteStart Planning — FreeLa Pause is the real desert experience close to Marrakech. No other venue in the Agafay area has the same authentic, stripped-back character. The candle-lit atmosphere at night is genuinely magical. The staff are warm, the food is simple but satisfying, and the setting photographs beautifully. For bohemian, adventurous couples who want something completely different from a riad wedding, this is the top choice in the region. The limitations are practical. No electricity means no hair dryers, no straighteners, no reliable phone charging. Brides who need a full glam setup should get ready at a hotel in Marrakech before driving out. The lodges are charming but not luxurious, walls are thick clay, decor is minimal, and the bathrooms are functional rather than fancy. Summer heat is intense from June through August with no air conditioning available. Some guests find the remoteness disorienting, especially at night when there is very little light. Older guests or those with mobility issues may struggle with the uneven terrain. And be honest with your guest list. If your grandmother expects a proper hotel, La Pause is not the answer.
